Sussex come out on top in top of the table clash.

This weekend Charnwood Rutland Warriors set off for an away trip to weekend in Brighton to face Sussex Thunder in a top of the table clash.

As the game began Warriors set off to a slow start with Sussex pulling ahead midway through the first quarter at 12-5. To try and slow Sussex momentum the Warriors made changes in their mid-court with Georgie Brock-Taylor switching with Jaydene Robinson at wing attack. Brock-Taylor made a great impact with strong drives down the court. A harsh suspension of the Warriors goal keeper Maddie Munroe-Hall saw her sent off the court for two minutes which reduced Warriors to six players and enabled Sussex to extend their league to 22-7 at the end of the quarter.

With an in-depth team talk ahead of the second quarter and a restructure of positions Warriors came out fighting making impact straight away with turnovers made by Melissa Oakman at goal keeper and Munroe-Hall at goal defence, leading to 6 consecutive goals from Sam Griffin at goal attack, and Ellie Gallacher at goal shooter. A more competitive second quarter saw the Warriors trail 36-20.

In the third quarter, centre court players, Corey McGlynn and Abi Hymas kept defensive pressure on the opposition forcing errors and stopping the ball from being fed into Sussex’s 6”4ft goal shooter. With some good passages of play Warriors were able to keep within reach of Sussex making the quarter a draw and the overall score at 48-32.

In the final quarter Warriors came together as a really powerful unit with turnovers throughout, enabling them to close the gap, making Sussex panic and make errors. Katie Welsh came on court as wing attack for the remaining minutes making great feeds and support. With a fantastic effort from Warriors they won the last quarter 18-9 just falling short by 8 goals of what would have been a great come back. Final score 57-49.

Squad: Ellie Gallacher, Sam Griffin, Jaydene Robinson, Georgie Brock-Taylor, Corey McGlynn, Abi Hymas, Melissa Oakman, Maddie Munroe-Hall, Laura Bailey, Katie Welsh and Rachael Duckers.
