Charnwood Rutland Warriors took another step towards promotion this weekend as they secured another win in National Prem Division Three with a comprehensive victory over Clan, 74-39.

Facing a Clan side they beat away earlier in the season Warriors came our strong with a strong defensive unit of Jaydene Robinson, Michelle Magee and Melissa Oakman working well to provide plenty of turnover opportunities which were rewarded and converted by their shooting circle of Ellie Gallacher and Sam Griffin. The clinical play of Warriors saw them finish the first quarter with a 25-9 lead.

Warriors kept their starting seven on court for the second quarter and pushed on with Oakman battling hard against Clan’s tall Goal Shooter to force turnover which continued to be rewarded by their attack as Clan struggled to keep pace with Warriors as they stretched to a 41-18 lead at half time.

With a comfortable lead player-coach Sam Griffin rang the changes with Magee moved to GK and young defensive duo Corey McGlynn and Abi Hymas went to work at WD and GD respectively. Brit Coleman entered the court at GA and all changes proved effective highlighting the strength and depth of the Warriors squad. Coleman did considerable damage to the Clan defence with her accurate shooting and great partnership with Gallagher. With 15 minutes remaining Warriors had an impressive 61-28 lead and there was no let-up in the final quarter.

With the introduction of Katie Welsh at C and young star Rachel Duckers at GA injecting more energy into the Warriors attack they continued to push on and finished strong with a 74-39 victory. With three matches remaining Warriors are on track to secure promotion to Division Two and next host Essex Open at Brooksby Melton College on 1 March.
