Charnwood Rutland Warriors kept their composure to record a crucial 56-49 victory over Bridgford in East Midlands Regional Division One.
With Bridgford just below them in the league table the Warriors knew they had to get the victory to stay out of the automatic relegation spot and give themselves a fighting chance of surviving in Division One.
With so much to play for it was a nervy start from both teams with both teams working hard to get their centre passes to goal. It was Bridgford who had the slight upper hand heading into the quarter time break with a 16-13 win.
Bridgford started the second quarter strongly with their influential Goal Attack dictating play in their attacking end and sinking shots from all over the circle. The Warriors kept fighting, working overtime to score off their centre passes and capitalise on turnovers to pull it back to 22-22, however Bridgford finished strongly to lead 28-24 at half time.
The Warriors came out back for the second half composed and knowing that they needed to keep their heads to win the game. The teams went goal for goal throughout the third quarter but in the last few minutes the Warriors came alive with turnovers across the court, pressuring Bridgford into mistakes. A run of seven unanswered goals saw the Warriors go into the final 15 minutes 42-39 up.
Charnwood continued the last 15 minutes in the same way they finished the third quarter, pressuring Bridgford into mistakes and calmly converting their own centre passes and turnover opportunities. Despite their best efforts Bridgford couldn’t find an answer to the calm, collected play of the Warriors who saw out the game and took the win, 56-49.
